Welcome to St. Mary!
Welcome to St. Mary Catholic School. We look forward to educating your child.
Since 1958, St. Mary has been dedicated to providing academic excellence founded in a solid Catholic curriculum to the students in Brevard County. As an award winning Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, our goal is to provide the best academic program for our students, challenging each student to attain his or her fullest academic potential and prepare them for higher education. We welcome your inquiry and encourage you to take a tour of our school.
Catholic Schools are faith communities. While Catholic schools, as an extension of the Church, emphasize Catholic teachings, virtues and traditions, we also value diversity and respect for those of all faiths.
St. Mary admits children who are bright, curious, capable and confident with strong potential and eagerness for academic and personal growth in an academically challenging setting. The Admissions Committee selects students on the basis of school records, aptitude and achievement testing, teacher recommendations, and student interviews. Priority consideration is granted to qualified sibling and alumni families as well as to members of St. Mary Catholic Church. All admission decisions are made in the best interest of each student. Once openings in each grade level have been filled, qualified applicants will be placed in an unranked waiting pool to be accepted as new openings occur. We invite you to contact our admissions office and submit your child’s academic documents for review.
Our Mission Statement
The mission of St. Mary Catholic School is to create and encourage an environment of academic and spiritual excellence where children can grow in the knowledge of God and are formed to be the Catholic Leaders and Missionary Disciples our world needs.
Our History
In 1958, the seeds of what would become a thriving parochial school for the children of Catholic families in Rockledge, FL, were planted under the visionary leadership of the late Father Spellman. That September, the newly built St. Mary's School welcomed 153 children, offering classes from kindergarten through sixth grade. Father Spellman served as the school's first principal, leading a dedicated team of seven Catholic lay teachers.
The official dedication of St. Mary's School took place on March 6, 1959, led by the late Archbishop Joseph Hurley, Bishop of St. Augustine. At that time, there were only 21 public schools in the county, with just seven serving Central Brevard. Catholic students traveled from surrounding areas including Cocoa Beach, Patrick Air Force Base, Merritt Island, Titusville, Cocoa, and Rockledge, forming a united community at St. Mary's.
Building on a successful inaugural year, the Sisters of Mercy from Limerick, Ireland, joined the faculty, bringing their rich tradition and commitment to education. In the school's second year, these five nuns, alongside the existing lay teachers, guided an increased enrollment of 300 students.
As the school continued to grow, enrollment soared to 456 students over the next four years, encompassing kindergarten through seventh grade. To accommodate this growth, construction of a new wing with five additional classrooms and office spaces began in the summer of 1965 and was completed by February the following year.
Throughout the first eight years, many dedicated Sisters of Mercy became an integral part of St. Mary's community. Their contributions and the life lessons they imparted are fondly remembered by former students and teachers, many of whom are now parents of current students. Sister Joan Cahill, reflecting on the school's nurturing environment, once said, “A sense of peace permeates the school environment, enhanced by the beauty of the grounds all around us. May that peace reign in your hearts and homes as we, together, put the children first and support and companion them on life's journey.”
Sister Joan's heartfelt words continue to resonate within the halls of St. Mary's today. Our mission to impart the Catholic faith is woven into every aspect of our school life.
Rooted in Catholic faith and traditions, St. Mary's has cherished the values instilled from its inception while looking forward to its bright future.
